Lottery boost for childcare projects
Childcare projects across Northern Ireland received a major lottery boost today from the New Opportunities Fund.
In the final announcement under the Out of School Hours Childcare grant programme, the National Lottery good cause distributor awarded grants totalling £417,843 to eight innovative projects creating 378 childcare places.
Today’s awards were made to projects in Belfast, Londonderry and counties Tyrone, Armagh and Antrim, giving parents a greater choice in good, affordable and accessible childcare.
One of the organisations to benefit is Derry Travellers' Support Group which secured a grant of £76,781 to provide 48 places for children aged three to 14 at the Travellers' Centre in Ballyarnett Park.
The benefits will extend beyond the care and support given to the children, as their parents will have more freedom to undertake training offered at the centre.
Winnie O'Grady, family and childcare development officer, said the new out of schools care would cater primarily for the travelling community. She added: “Providing this childcare facility helps parents access the training which will help them avail of skills which will benefit their health and lifestyle."
Today's lottery boost means that the Fund has invested more than £11.4 million to create 14,332 childcare places across Northern Ireland since the programme opened in 1999.
