Vigil To Be Held In Memory Of Jo Cox At Belfast City Hall

A vigil is to be held at Belfast City Hall in memory of Labour MP Jo Cox, who was killed in Birstall, West Yorkshire, on Thursday, 16 June.

The ceremony is to be held at noon on Sunday, 19 June.

Mrs Cox was shot and stabbed, according to eyewitnesses.

She had previously been attending a constituency surgery before her murder in Leeds.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing.

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA said: "It is with heartfelt sorrow that I send my condolences and those of the SDLP to the family and friends of Jo Cox. Our thoughts are also with her constituents and the Labour Party whom she served with such dedication.

"The shadow of violence has once again been cast over democracy today. But it is the spirit, the passion and the unimpeachable character of people like Jo and her husband Brendan that makes us stronger than those who carry out this kind of brutality."

Alliance Leader David Ford MLA said: "This is heart-breaking news about a hard working MP who was serving her constituents when she was subjected to a brutal attack.

"This is an utterly shocking incident and my thoughts, and the thoughts of the entire Alliance Party, are with the family and friends of Jo Cox at this terrible time."
