Waste Incinerator Plans To Be Reconsidered

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is set to review plans for a waste incinerator near Glengormley, Co Antrim.

According to reports, the council is reconsidering its commitment to the project after advice from its lawyers.

Planning permission for the facility was turned down last year by the then Environment Minister Mark H Durkan on the grounds that it could pose a risk to health, as well as discourage recycling.

The council was one of six signed up to the plant, which would have dealt with black bin waste from all six council areas.

The consortium behind the plan has appealed the decision to the Planning Appeals Commission, and the other five councils have said they will support the appeal.

On Thursday, the council met to vote on its position, deciding to defer its decision.

Following the meeting, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council released a statement saying it wanted new information regarding the duration of the contract as well as they tonnage of waste involved. The plant would be located in its area if the project went ahead.
