SDLP Praises Work Of Coaches And Boxers

The work of coaches and boxers at a club in Bessbrook, Newry has been praised by the SDLP.

MLA for Newry and Armagh, Justin Mc Nulty, visited the Sacred Heart Boxing club and took to the ring with some of the boxers.

He said: "I escaped unscathed but left with the greatest respect for everyone involved in running this club.

"The discipline that young people learn from the coaching and training at boxing clubs such as Sacred Heart will serve them well throughout their lives and will help them become active and positive citizens.

"It is important to recognise that the voluntary contribution of men such as Seamus is invaluable. I am working along with the club officials to ensure that their work is not in any way hampered by the burden of expenses such as rates."

Power Restored To Around 9,000 Homes And Businesses In Ballymoney

NIE Networks has confirmed it has restored power to approximately 9,000 homes and businesses in Ballymoney, Co Antrim.

The electricity firm said the fault was due to a problem with an underground cable in a substation.

It said the areas affected were Ballymoney town, Stranocum, Dervock and Dunloy.

UUP Welcomes Opening Of Kingsmill Inquest

The UUP has welcomed the opening of the Inquest into the Kingsmills massacre.

Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy said: "Over forty years ago ten Protestant workmen were murdered by the IRA at the side of a road in south Armagh, in one of the most shocking and brutal sectarian attacks of the entire Troubles.

"I fervently hope that the inquest will lead to the maximum amount of truth and justice for the families involved. I also pay tribute to the families, the sole survivor and the campaigners and legal teams who have brought us to this day."

Claims Cash Was Denied To Protestant Boxers
Sports Minister Caral Ni Chuilin has refuted claims that funding was denied to a Sandy Row boxing club. TUV MLA Jim Allister claims the boxing club, situated in a protestant area of Belfast, was refused funding by the Sinn Féin Sports Minister’s department because it was not part of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association.

Paddy Barnes Retires From Boxing
Belfast fighter Paddy Barnes is to retire from professional boxing. The twice Olympic bronze medalist from north Belfast issued a statement on Twitter on Thursday night after "taking some time" to reflect. "I have loved every minute of boxing, it has been my life for the last 21 years," he said.

Local Boxers Recognised At Belfast Sports Awards
Carl Frampton, Paddy Barnes and Michael Hawkins have been inducted into Belfast's Sporting Hall of Fame in recognition of their contribution to local boxing at the Belfast Sports Awards.

Belfast Boxers Sign Professional Deals
Belfast boxer Michael Conlon has confirmed he is turning professional. Conlon has signed up with Top Ranking Boxing following his defeat at the Olympics in Rio. In a tweet he wrote: "It's done!" Boxer Paddy Barnes also signed a professional deal with Matthew Macklin's MGM group.
