New Workers Rights Centre Opens To The Public

A new Workers Rights Centre has opened at Liberty Hall in Dublin, giving members of the public access to information and advice on workplace issues, trade union SIPTU has announced.

The centre, which is open to everyone, will be staffed by experienced Workers Rights Centre (WRC) Advocates and Information Assistants, is the first of a series of welcome centres planned for SIPTU offices throughout the country.

Head of the WRC, Tom O'Driscoll, said: "Our staff are committed to providing up to date free, confidential and accurate information on workplace issues to members of the public who drop in off the street. Representation will be further offered to those who wish to avail of the expertise and knowledge currently available to SIPTU members."

WRC Advocates and Information Assistants have provided advice and representation to thousands of SIPTU members since its inception in 2010. During this period the WRC has saved the jobs of thousands of SIPTU members or satisfactorily addressed their grievances. The WRC is also the single biggest user of the State's employment rights bodies recovering close to €20 million in compensation for workers.

Mr O'Driscoll added: "The new centre is a perfect complement to the WRC website and dedicated helpline. It allows those workers who are suffering unfair treatment at work and who would prefer face to face advice in a confidential and empathetic setting, to drop in to the centre on Eden Quay."

"It is significant that SIPTU is setting up this Welcome Centre in the heart of Dublin city," said SIPTU General Secretary, Joe O'Flynn.

"I am confident that this Centre will be a one stop shop for workers both young and old for those who are lucky enough to be in unions and those whose opportunities for becoming organised are made difficult by exploitative employers. A welcoming hand will be extended regardless of nationality or creed."

He added: "Plans are in existence to set up Workers Rights Centres throughout the country. Our union's mission to protect workers and their families by opening up facilities like this in local communities nationwide is just one further but important step in properly honouring James Connolly and his brave comrades during this commemorative period."
