Litter fines to rise during 12-week trial
The general public could be paying higher penalties for dropping litter if a government trial is successful.
Plans by the Department of Environment (DoE) will see fixed penalties double from £25 up to £50 as part of a 12-week consultation exercise for anyone caught dropping litter or allowing their dog to foul on the pavement.
If the experiment is successful it could be introduced on a full time basis next year.
A spokesperson for the DoE said littering and dog fouling remained a concern to the government and general public, and that the penalty increase should act as a greater deterrent.
