Sinn Féin Cllr To Become First Openly Gay Deputy Mayor
A Sinn Féin councillor is to become Belfast's first openly gay Deputy Mayor.
The party selected north Belfast councillor Mary Ellen Campbell and she said it is another step forward for the rights of the LGBT community and for equality in Belfast.
She said: "I look forward to representing all the citizens of Belfast in the role of Deputy Mayor regardless of creed, class, gender or ethnicity and discharging my duties in the most inclusive and equal basis possible.
"As a lifelong equality campaigner I know only too well that many within our communities right across the city live daily with discrimination, hate crime and exclusion. I will continue to do all I can to challenge that.
"Inclusion will be one of the themes of my term in office as it’s vital to promote positive messages and demonstrate public commitment to equality.
"I'm a woman, I'm openly gay, I’m a Republican Ex-prisoner and I’m from a working-class community in North Belfast. So I would say I have some experience of the challenges that many marginalised citizens face in Belfast."

Mr Adams said: "The recent historic referendum result in the South in favour of equal marriage rights was a significant advance for the cause of equality in Ireland.

Equality Commission Enters LGBT Debate
Northern Ireland's Equality Commission has told the BBC that Stormont needs to take action to protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people living in Northern Ireland. The Commission was reacting to the continued vetoing by the DUP of votes on the subject of gay marriage at Stormont.

Women receive better pay with gender equality duty
Thousands of women working in the public sector in Northern Ireland will be able to look forward to better pay and conditions from Friday 6 April as the new gender equality duty comes into force. The duty will require public sector employers to address sex discrimination, promote gender equality and to provide information and consult with unions.
