Renewed Appeal For Witnesses Following Disturbance At Ormeau Road Parade
An appeal for witnesses following a disturbance during a Junior Orange Lodge parade in south Belfast on Tuesday, 29 March, has been renewed by the Police Ombudsman.
A police officer discharged CS spray at the parade on the Ormeau Road, and the policing watchdog has been contacted by almost 40 people about the incident.
A spokesman said they were keen to hear from anyone else who may have seen what happened or recorded video footage, whether or not they were involved in the parade itself.
He said: "The incident happened at around 5.10pm close to the Ormeau Road's junction with Park Road, near the Ormeau Bakery apartments.
"We're keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened immediately before, during and after the use of CS Spray by an officer."
Ulster Unionist South Belfast Assembly candidate raised serious concerns over the incident.
He said: "Police action at the parade has raised serious questions about policing judgement. Deploying CS spray is far from a conventional or proportionate way to respond to suspected criminal damage.
"Even then, I don't believe anyone has even been arrested or charged with criminal damage. I would encourage all complaints to be channelled through the Police Ombudsman’s office and I hope the children bear no lasting distress."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Police Ombudsman's freephone witness appeal line, which is 0800 032 7880.
