Spellar opens £4.9m Comber bypass
The £4.9 million second stage of the Comber Bypass has demonstrated the Department for Regional Development’s continuing commitment to the improvement of Northern Ireland’s Strategic Road Network, according to NIO Minister John Spellar.
The Minister opened the new Comber Bypass today - a project finished almost three months ahead of schedule. Speaking at the opening, the Minister said that the scheme would bring long awaited and much welcomed relief to the town centre, where traffic congestion had continued to increase over the years.
"The bypass will provide a safer and more pleasant environment for those who live, work, go to school and do business in Comber," he said.
The new bypass follows the line of the old Comber to Newtownards railway extending from Stage one of the bypass, which was constructed about 30 years ago. The scheme involved the construction of 1.6km of single carriageway, two new roundabouts and a 900 metre extension of the Newtownards Road dual carriageway along with the upgrading of the Ballyhenry Road / Ringcreevy Road Junction.
A stretch of the Ulster Way Footway has been reconstructed with links to the existing footpath network.
In particular, there is a new footpath link under the new March River Bridge which links to a riverside path along the Enler River leading to the town centre.
