£2.5m support pledged to tackle crime against older people

Criminal Justice Minister John Spellar today launched a £2.5 million campaign to tackle crime against older people.

Under the new initiative the government will to supply and fit, free of charge, additional security measures in the homes of approximately 10,000 people aged 75 and over, across Northern Ireland.

Speaking today at the launch of the NIO's Community Safety Unit's 'Stay Safe, Stay Secure' campaign, Mr Spellar said: "We have all been horrified at the news reports of older people being burgled, robbed and even attacked in their own homes by bullies, thugs and cowards.

"By providing additional security items in the homes of some of the most vulnerable people in our community we hope to make them feel safer in their own homes. This is not about locking older people in but about locking crime out."

This programme, to be known as the Lock Out Crime (LOC) scheme, will be delivered in direct partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. It will begin in five pilot areas across the province later this month and will run up to the end of March 2006.

While welcoming the campaign, UUP Policing Board member Fred Cobain warned it was only a start on what will be a continual focus on tackling “an evil scourge which blights society".

Today's launch was further highlighted following the news that an elderly brother and sister were held at knifepoint in their Co Armagh home.

The two siblings, who are in their 80s, had their home ransacked during the ordeal last night.
