Dale Farm owner announces £4.5m Centre of Excellence

The parent company of leading Ice Cream maker, Dale Farm are to invest £4.5 million in a new Technical Centre of Excellence.

United Dairy Farmers will use the Centre to develop innovative dairy products for international markets made from milk supplied by local farmers.

The funding, which is being backed by EU PEACE II funding, was announced by Economy Minister, Ian Pearson. He said: "Our support for this substantial investment in innovation by United Dairy Farmers reflects the Government’s recognition that to compete successfully in today’s global markets Northern Ireland requires the development of an economic environment that is both knowledge-based and technologically innovative.

“This new centre will forge a powerful innovation network in the dairy sector by working closely with the Department of Food Science at Queen’s University, the Food Centre at CAFRE’s, Loughry Campus College and the Northern Ireland Centre for Diet and Health at the University of Ulster, as well as other research centres of excellence in Ireland, Great Britain and Europe."

The Minister said efforts to increase the level of industrial R&D in Northern Ireland were already bearing fruit and that an innovation economy was steadily being created here.

“Continued investment in R&D will help to ensure that Northern Ireland remains competitive in a fast moving international market for dairy products,” he added.
