New £6.3m School Development Opens In Newry

A new £6.3 million school development has opened in Newry.

St Clare's Abbey Primary School is an amalgamation of St Colman's Abbey and St Clare's Convent Primary School.

Education Minister John O'Dowd said: "The new build represents a significant investment of over £6 million and brings us to this successful conclusion and I wish everyone associated with the school every success as you embark on a new chapter for St Clare's Abbey."

Principal Michelle Monaghan said: "The community of St Clare's Abbey is overjoyed with our amazing new school and it's truly beautiful and unique setting. We are experiencing rural quietude in the heart of the city of Newry, how rare!"

New Teacher Professional Learning Strategy Launches

A new Teacher Professional Learning strategy has launched.

Education Minister John O'Dowd said it sets out his vision for teacher professional learning through to 2025.

He said: "We know that the quality of teaching significantly affects pupil outcomes. We therefore need to support our teachers to deal with the many complex issues they face in the modern class-room.

"The strategic vision for this strategy is – Every teacher is a learning leader, accomplished in working collaboratively with all partners in the interests of children and young people."

Attack On Pet Cat Branded 'Disgusting' – Lunn

The Alliance Party has described an attack on a pet cat as "disgusting".

The 18-month-old Tabby cat suffered serious burns in the attack in Hillsborough on Wednesday.

Alliance Lagan Valley MLA Trevor Lunn said: "I strongly condemn those behind such a sick act and my thoughts are with the owner who discovered the terrible scene.

"I would appeal for anyone with information to contact the police immediately."

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

New Bill To Make School Uniforms More Affordable
Education Minister Paul Givan has welcomed the Executive's decision to allow the preparation of a new School Uniforms Bill. The proposed legislation aims to make school uniforms more affordable for parents by requiring schools to prioritise affordability in their uniform policies.
