Over 25% Of Reported Sex Offences Involve Children Aged 11 And Under
Over 25% of sex offences reported to police in Northern Ireland involved children under 11 years of age, according to a report by the NSPCC.
The charity said there has been a 53% rise in sex attacks over the last three years.
However, the NSPCC said victims of the abuse are more willing to come forward.
The number of child sex offences reported to the PSNI last year rose to 1,516.
NSPCC Northern Ireland's head of service, Neil Anderson, described the figures as "appalling".
Mr Anderson said: "Sexual abuse can shatter a child's mental health; the cruelty can leave them anxious, depressed, and even suicidal.
"That is why it is crucial that every single child who has endured abuse and needs support must get timely, thorough help so that they can learn how to handle disturbing emotions and behaviours, and rebuild their lives.
"Our It's Time campaign demands that the Government makes the mental health of abused children a priority."
4ni apologises for any confusion or misunderstanding in the earlier report. This has now been corrected.
