Derry man dies after mob attack ambulance

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service has reacted angrily to claims that a man died in Londonderry at the weekend because an ambulance was not immediately available to come to his aid.

James McGinley, a 23-year-old father of one, died after being stabbed in an attack outside a block of flats in the Little James Street area on Saturday morning.

It was revealed today that an ambulance had been dispatched to the incident but was unable to reach the victim because of a violent mob at the scene.

After receiving a report on the incident on Monday, NIO Minister Angela Smith said: "What happened was they had to turn back because police who were trying to save the man's life had to leave the scene because they were under attack from a mob," she said.

Gilbert McClean of the Ambulance Service said that an ambulance had been made available four minutes after the emergency call was received.

A man appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court today charged with Mr McGinley's murder.

Bartholomew Fisher, 42, denied the charge. He was remanded in custody until November 6.
