Choose A Career In Construction
Construction staff at Bellway West Midlands hope this year's National Construction Week will raise awareness of the opportunities that exist for young people in the industry, as well as boosting its apprenticeship intake.
Richard Holland, Bellway West Midlands construction director, explained: "We currently have six apprentices at different stages of development training with us and we're always looking to recruit school leavers who have an interest in the industry.
"University can be a very expensive education option and there's no guarantee of a job at the end of a three or four year course. Bellway apprentices earn and learn at the same time and at the end of their apprenticeship they have a professional qualification which entitles them to a good wage and excellent career opportunities."
Bellway apprentices Daniel Tidman, Leigh Morgan and Ian Mee all left school at 16 and now work together at Bellway's prestigious St Christopher's development in Binley Woods, Coventry. The trio's on-site training is supplemented by academic study and each spends one day a week at college.
Leigh Morgan said: "I didn't have much interest in schoolwork but doing an apprenticeship is completely different. I'm working towards a NVQ in Joinery and Carpentry and I'm getting paid at the same time. It's surprising how quickly you pick up basic skills because the on-site training is very thorough and I'm really enjoying being part of the Bellway team."
