Viable Pipe Bomb Discovered In North Belfast

A viable pipe bomb has been discovered during a security alert in north Belfast.

Police closed the Lepper Street area for a number of hours on Monday, however it has since been reopened.

Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee condemned those responsible.

He said: "Given that schools were back following mid term break many young people may well have passed this device.

"Thankfully no one was hurt in this incident but it cause a great deal of inconvenience locally.

"Those behind this incident have nothing to offer the local community and need to end these pointless actions immediately."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Six police officers hurt in disturbances
East Belfast has seen another night of violence that has left six police officers injured. Shortly before midnight police in the lower Newtownards Road area came under attack from large crowds and were subjected to sustained attack from mobs throwing bricks and petrol bombs.

Investigation Launched After Reported Rape In North Belfast
Police have launched an investigation after a woman was allegedly raped in north Belfast. The incident happened on the Cavehill Road in the Waterworks area at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, 17 May. Enquiries are ongoing. No further details have been released.
