Northern Ireland 'on course' with sustainable development: Smith

Northern Ireland is making steady progress towards putting Sustainable Development at the heart of the government’s work, according to NIO Minister Angela Smith.

In a speech to an international audience of Engineering, Energy and Environment experts in Belfast today, Mrs Smith said that Northern Ireland was entering a "new era" in which DOE will be equipped to engage actively in policy at EU level.

Mrs Smith said that since the Environment Order was enacted last December Northern Ireland’s ability to deliver on UK Air Quality Strategy targets had been strengthened.

She added: "Last but not least, the Order completely overhauls the system of protection afforded to Northern Ireland’s finest semi-natural habitat and species sites.”

The Minister also confirmed that DoE was currently working on a raft of other environmental legislation including air quality and management of waste which was crucial to natural resources and on the quality of the environment.
