Belfast City help boost bmi passenger numbers

Belfast City Airport has helped leading UK airline, bmi record a 21% increase in passenger numbers for the month of September.

The company's Belfast route saw passenger numbers rise by 14% with the overall number of passengers flying on bmi airlines in September rising to 881,189. The overall monthly load factor also grew by 1% to 74%.

The latest figures put the company on course for a record breaking year, with more than seven million passengers carried in the first nine months of 2003, a 23% increase on the same period last year.

Austin Reid, bmi chief executive, said: “The continued growth in the number of passengers carried each month is set to deliver a record year, and with three months still to go we expect to significantly exceed the 7.5 million passengers carried in 2002."

bmibaby, the low cost arm of bmi, also continues to experience strong growth across the network.

New routes from Manchester to Prague and Barcelona, launched this month, are boosting passenger figures at the airline’s north west base - set to be enhanced further with the start of services to Geneva in December.

bmibaby begins flights from its newest base at Teesside to Belfast, Geneva and Malaga later this month, with Prague, Geneva and Milan added from Cardiff.
