Convicted Child Killer Robert Black Dies In Prison

Convicted child killer Robert Black has died in Maghaberry Prison near Lisburn, aged 68.

Black was serving 12 life sentences for murdering four young girls in the 1980s. He was also suspected of other killings.

In 2011 he was given another life sentence for the abduction and murder of Jennifer Cardy.

He kidnapped the nine-year-old as she was riding on her bike to a friend's house in Ballinderry, Co Antrim.

In 1994, he was found guilty of murdering 11-year-old Susan Maxwell, from the Scottish Borders, five-year-old Caroline Hogg, from Edinburgh, and Sarah Harper, 10, from Morley, near Leeds.

He was also convicted of a failed abduction in Nottingham in 1988.

He was also the prime suspect in the case of 13-year-old Genette Tate, who went missing in Devon in 1978 and her body has never been found.

An NI Prison Service spokesperson said: "The Prison Service has confirmed that a 68-year-old prisoner has died at Maghaberry Prison.

"While this is not being treated as suspicious, the Prison Service has informed the PSNI, coroner, and prisoner ombudsman. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."
