Scheme launched to get lone parents back into work

Lone parents are expected to benefit, both while they look for work and when they get a job, in 12 new pilot areas announced today.

The Work Search Premium pilots, which are scheduled to start in October 2004, is expected to give lone parents, who have been on benefit for more than one year, £20 extra a week for up to six months if they agree to look for work. For those who get jobs of more than 16 hours a week, an extra £40 a week is available for the first year they are in work.

Both new payments will be piloted in eight areas - Bradford; Cardiff and Vale; Dudley and Sandwell; Lancashire West; Leicestershire; London South East; London West; and Edinburgh.

And in a further four areas - Central London; Leeds; North London; and Staffordshire - In-Work Credit will be piloted separately to test the effectiveness of this alone to encourage and help lone parents into work.

Launching the 'Work Search Premium and In-Work Credit', Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Andrew Smith, said that the scheme was "about making work pay" and "bringing down the barriers that stop people moving from welfare to work".

The government has claimed that since 1997, 200,000 lone parents have returned to work and that the lone parent employment rate now tops 50%.
