Family Targeted In Ballymena 'Hate Crime' Attack

A family have been targeted in a 'hate crime' attack after a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of a house in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

The incident happened in the Kintyre Park area in the Ballykeel estate at around 1am on Tuesday.

The bomb went on fire in the front room of the property, however the occupants were able to put the flames out and escape uninjured.

Two men wearing hooded tops were seen leaving the area just after the attack, according to the police.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

SDLP North Antrim Representative Connor Duncan has condemned those behind the attack.

He said: "Just as representatives of Islam denounced totally the actions of those responsible for the Paris and Beirut attacks, the people of Ballymena have made it undoubtedly clear that this attack was not perpetrated in their name and does not represent the views of a community that welcomes diversity and celebrates difference.

"Those responsible for this attack are at odds with the people of Ballymena and North Antrim who stand untied against Islamophobia and all hate crime."

Sinn Féin MLA Daithi McKay said: "It is only good fortune that we are not dealing with a death or serious injury following a petrol bomb attack on a house in Ballymena.

"The occupants of the house were able to extinguish the fire before it took hold and therefore prevent more serious damage.

"Attacks against people whether it is on religious, race or sexual orientation are wrong and must stop."
