Queen's Scientists Make Porous Liquid Which Dissolves Large Amounts Of Gas
Queen's University scientists have made a major breakthrough by making a porous liquid that can dissolve unusually large amounts of gas, which are absorbed into the 'holes' in the liquid.
Researchers in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen's, along with colleagues at the University of Liverpool, UK, and other, international partners, published the results of their research in the journal Nature.
The three-year research project could pave the way for many more efficient and greener chemical processes, including ultimately the procedure known as carbon capture, trapping carbon dioxide from major sources.
Professor Stuart James of Queen's School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering said: "Materials which contain permanent holes, or pores, are technologically important. They are used for manufacturing a range of products from plastic bottles to petrol. However, until recently, these porous materials have been solids. What we have done is to design a special liquid from the 'bottom-up' – we designed the shapes of the molecules which make up the liquid so that the liquid could not fill up all the space. Because of the empty holes we then had in the liquid, we found that it was able to dissolve unusually large amounts of gas. These first experiments are what is needed to understand this new type of material, and the results point to interesting long-term applications which rely on dissolution of gases.
"A few more years' research will be needed, but if we can find applications for these porous liquids they could result in new or improved chemical processes. At the very least, we have managed to demonstrate a very new principle – that by creating holes in liquids we can dramatically increase the amount of gas they can dissolve. These remarkable properties suggest interesting applications in the long term."

Double Arson Attack In Portrush
No one was injured in a double overnight arson attack in the seaside town of Portrush. The flat at Eglinton Street was first targeted at about 1.25am when two windows were broken and flammable liquid poured inside. Then in a second attack on the property within two hours, two petrol bombs were used to attack the property.

Man in court over Belfast bomb find
A man has appeared in court charged in connection with the discovery of a large incendiary-type bomb in Belfast at the weekend. Terence McCafferty, 34, from the New Lodge area of the city, was charged with conspiracy to cause an explosion and possessing an improvised explosive device.

Coalisland residents return home after gas leak sealed
People have returned to their homes in Coalisland after the fire service contained a gas leak from a tank in a farmyard. The gas leak, in the Annaghmore Road area of the town, resulted in the evacuation of 200 homes. It is believed to have developed after a 30-tonne tank containing liquid petroleum gas ruptured in the hot weather on Monday.

Gas Storage To Be Built Under Lough
A £440m gas storage facility is to be built a mile underneath Larne Lough. The development will enable 500m cubic metres of natural gas to be stored in caverns underneath the lough. The new bank will be able to hold enough gas to provide energy for Northern Ireland for sixty days.
