Flu vaccination more important than ever
People who annually get the flu vaccination are being urged to make their appointment immediately.
Launching this year’s flu immunisation programme, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ian Carson confirmed that £2 million had been made available for this year's flu immunisation programme.
Speaking at the launch in Inishcoole Day Centre, Rathcoole, Dr Carson said: “We must continue to build on the success of the campaign over the last three years and so I am urging everyone at risk to make sure they get their flu vaccination this year.
“People at risk include not only all those over 65 but also the under 65s who have a chronic heart or chest condition, suffer from asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, have lowered immunity due to disease or treatment such as steroids or cancer therapy, or any other serious medical condition."
Dr Carson said the outbreak of SARS earlier in the year made it even more important for people in risk groups to avail of the immunisation programme. He said this would help to reduce cases of respiratory illness which might otherwise be suspected as SARS and require investigation.
This year's campaign, entitled 'Protect Yourself - Catch The Vaccine – Not The Flu', runs from the 1 October to 28 November.
