New Chair Of Livestock And Meat Commission Appointed

A new Chair to the Livestock and Meat Commission has been appointed.

Mr Gerard McGivern was selected as the new Chair and the appointment is effective from 07 November 2015 to 6 November 2018.

The Livestock and Meat Commission, which was established in 1967, has the general duty of assisting the development of the livestock and livestock products sectors of the local agri-food industry.

It provides a range of services to producers and meat traders including market intelligence and undertakes promotional activities.

It also administers the Farm Quality Assurance Scheme and market support arrangements for beef and lamb in Northern Ireland.

NI Farming Minister Michelle Gildernew has announced the re-appointment of Owen Brennan as the Chairman to the Livestock and Meat Commission (LMC). Mr Brennan has been re-appointed for an additional five months from 1 November 2008 to 31 March 2009.

Red Meat Producers Losing £260m Annually
A report on the red meat industry says that the NI industry is losing £260m a year and jobs are threatened by cheaper meat imports. The Red Meat Task Force report prompted calls for supermarkets to pay more for locally produced beef, or face the prospect of the collapse of the local market.

Minister announces aid package for beef industry
Agriculture Minister Jeff Rooker has announced new measures worth around £1.3 million to assist Northern Ireland's beef industry. The Minister explained that the package of measures announced for England in October will be replicated in Northern Ireland to help address the particular challenges facing the beef sector at present.
