Parents warned to be vigilant following abduction attempt

The chairman of the Castlereagh Policing Partnership Board has warned parents to be vigilant concerning the whereabouts of their children.

UUP Councillor Michael Copeland made his plea following the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old girl in the Beechill area of East Belfast yesterday.

Councillor Copeland said: “This is the latest in a number of similar incidents in the area and it is worrying.

“I would appeal to parents to make sure they know where their children are at all times.

“There is a very real concern in the area about the number of attempts to take children and I would ask anyone who has seen previous incidents to get in touch with the police District Commander Gordon Reid.”

The girl was walking along Beechill Park West at around 4pm on Sunday when a man attempted to entice a girl into his car. When she refused he stepped out of the vehicle and approached her. She subsequently ran off.

The man is believed to have dark hair and was wearing glasses with a blue top.
