Trees Across NI In Tree Of The Year Competition
A number of trees across Northern Ireland have been shortlisted for Tree of the Year, nominated by the Woodland Trust.
The Dark Hedges in Ballymoney are among four other trees in Bangor, Portadown, west Belfast and L'Derry nominated in the competition, the winner of which will then compete against trees across Europe.
The nominated trees include:
• The Peace Tree: oak at Woodvale Park, west Belfast. Planted on Empire Day 1919, a tree of remembrance for those who never returned from the First World War.
• The Dark Hedges: (see top) avenue of beech trees at Bregagh Road, Stranocum, Ballymoney, as made famous by HBO series Game of Thrones.
• The Mulberry Tree at Castle Park, Bangor. An unusual species in Northern Ireland, planted sometime after 1852 by lady of the house Harriette Ward.
• Tree of Witness: on the lawn outside Enagh House, Enagh Lough, Derry/Londonderry. The magnificent oak tree has stood for centuries.
• Moneypenny's Yew: the 40ft yew towers over Moneypenney's Lock House, the original 18th Century house by the banks of Newry Canal.
• Tree of Peace and Unity: two lime trees that joined together to become one at Dunadry Hotel, Antrim. The tree that offered shade to Tony Blair, David Trimble and John Hume when they met to broker peace in Northern Ireland in 1998.
