Two Firefighters Injured Following Attack In North Belfast

Two firefighters have been injured after being attacked by a gang of youths in north Belfast.

The incident occurred in the New Lodge area on Friday night.

Sinn Féin Councillor JJ Magee condemned the attack.

He said: "The New Lodge is a good community that has been through a lot and this small number of anti-community criminal elements are in no way representative of the vast majority of our young people

"I would appeal for anyone involving themselves with such activity to reflect today that it could be your family in need of rescue by emergency services and such disgraceful actions put lives at risk.

"Those responsible for this attack should be arrested and brought before the courts and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward."

North Belfast Alliance Councillor Nuala McAllister said: "The Fire Service was there to help the community from the results of antisocial elements, so it is a concerning turn of events. I would appeal to parents to be aware of where their children are, particularly at night, to ensure they are not involved in such reckless actions.

"When the Fire Service is attacked like this, it also means they are unable to attend other incidents, therefore putting more lives at risk."
