Victims Only Hear What Perpetrators Want Them To - Elliott

UUP MP Tom Elliott has said that victims engaging with the proposed Independent Commission on Information Retrieval in the future should be clear that they will likely only hear what the perpetrators want them to.

Mr Elliott MP said: "Since the idea of the Independent Commission on Information Retrieval emerged during the Haass process, the Ulster Unionist Party has been clear that those victims who would potentially engage with the ICIR in the future would be likely to only hear what the perpetrators wanted them to hear.

"It was, and continues to be, our view that while we are sceptical of the benefits of the process, no family should be denied the opportunity to pursue more information about the death of their loved one, but they should do so with their eyes wide open. There is no guarantee they would get the whole story, or even that the information they would receive is the truth."

SF Supports Marriage Equality

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has said that equality and civil rights is at the core of Sinn Féin’s decision to pursue the issue of marriage equality.

Ms Ruane said: "Sinn Féin gave a commitment to campaign for marriage equality and given the recent moves in both Britain and the South of Ireland we believe the time is right to extend these rights to the north.

"There has been a huge change in attitudes towards the LGB&T community as was expressed in the referendum in the South and also the support given to Pride events right across the North.

"Equality threatens no one and it is time all parties stood up for the rights of all citizens regardless of creed, colour or sexual orientation and allow the introduction of marriage equality."
