Up To 1,700 Jobs Threatened At Legal And General - Unite
Plans by Legal and General to close a large site in Kingswood, Surrey, threatens up to 1,700 highly specialised jobs, the loss of which will impact customers warns Unite the union.
The insurance and investment giant, which has reported an 18 per cent increase in operating profits, has announced detailed plans to vacate the Kingswood site by 2017, citing potential cost savings. Unite has launched a collective consultation with L&G members and will be holding group meetings throughout September.
Ian Methven Unite regional officer said: "With up to 1,700 Kingswood jobs in the firing line, it is inevitable that such drastic cuts will severely undermine customer service. Many of our experienced members have specialised pensions knowledge which is highly valued by customers, yet L&G seem prepared to throw that all away in a reckless rush to make short-term savings.
"Unite has started a collective consultation and we will support our members at every step. We are demanding that Legal and General minimise job losses through natural attrition, voluntary redundancy and by ensuring that all staff are offered genuine and realistic offers of relocation."
