Police Appeal Over Mass Fighting In North Belfast

Police are appealing for information following mass fighting and incidents of criminal damage in north Belfast.

The incidents occurred in the Skegoniell area on Friday.

Around 20 to 30 youths, some armed with knives and sticks, were involved in a fight and number of vehicles were damaged.

A 17-year-old male received a head injury and was treated at the scene.

A Police Officer also received a minor injury.

Chief Inspect David Moore said: "Young people should be aware of the consequences of their behaviour not only in terms of the disruption to local communities but also the personal implications to them in carrying out criminal behaviour.

"It is an offence to possess an article which is sharply pointed (except a folding pocket-knife) in a public place unless it is for use at work, for religious reasons, or as part of a national costume. The maximum penalty for such an offence is imprisonment of up to six months and/or a fine of £5000 on summary conviction or two years on conviction on indictment (Section 139 Criminal Justice Act 1988)."

Alliance Councillor Nuala McAllister condemned the violence.

She said: "We cannot condone violence on our streets and with reports of a teenager being treated for a head injury it is clear this situation could have ended up much worse.

"But condemnations alone are not good enough - instead of criticising we need to urgently get to the root of the problem, bringing an end to this kind of unrest on our streets.

"While there are concerns this might have been pre-arranged - with social media playing a part - what is clear is that there are underlying issues here and must invest more in our youth provision, tackling the cause of these problems."
