Man Killed In East Belfast Shooting

A murder investigation has been launched following the fatal shooting of a man in east Belfast.

The victim, who has been named as Kevin McGuigan Sr, 50, was shot in the Comber Court area of the Short Strand just before 9pm on Wednesday evening.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is believed he was was well known in republican circles.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

Sinn Féin councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile condemned the shooting.

He said: "I unreservedly condemn the fatal shooting of a local man near his home in the Short Strand tonight and I am saddened to learn that the man has died. 

"This action has shocked the local community and my thoughts are with the family of the victim. There can be no place for actions like this in our society. The community here rejects any attempt by any armed group to turn the clock back to the past."

A shooting in the Short Strand area of east Belfast has been condemned as a "despicable" act. Police said a man walking in the area was shot at around 7.45pm on Saturday 25 January. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. The incident in a busy built up area sparked outrage in the local community.

Man Killed In West Belfast Shooting
A man has died after being shot in west Belfast. The attack happened in the Glenbawn Avenue area of Poleglass at around 8pm on Tuesday, 13 February. It is believed he was shot in the chest. Sinn Féin Councillor Stephen Magennis condemned the shooting and described it as "brutal".

DPP Meeting Disrupted
An Ulster Unionist councillor has been attacked by youths throwing eggs and stones after a ground-breaking District Policing Partnership meeting in east Belfast on Monday night. Former Belfast mayor, Jim Rodgers was at the meeting in Short Strand Community Centre and said members of the Irish Republican Socialist Party tried to disrupt it.

Man Arrested Over Paramilitary-Style Shooting In L'Derry
A man has been arrested in connection with a paramilitary-style shooting in Co L'Derry. A 33-year-old man was shot in the legs and abdomen in the Lisfannon Park area on Tuesday, 08 August. Police described the assault as "brutal and horrific". The 43-year-old suspect was detained in L'Derry on Tuesday, 15 August.
