Two Arrested After Car Crashes Through Wall In L'Derry

Two men have been arrested after a car crashed through a wall at a primary school in L'Derry.

The incident occurred just before 7.30am at St Eithne's Primary School on the Springtown Road.

No-one is believed to have been injured.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfair and dangerous driving.

An 18-year-old man was arrested for taking a car without consent, driving wile unfair and criminal damage.

The two men are being detained in police custody.

SDLP councillor Shauna Cusack said: "It is extremely fortunate that school was out and there were no children on their way to class and in the playground or this could have been so much worse.

"This area has been plagued by joy riders and those responsible for this reckless and irresponsible action should face the full extent of the law."

A fire at a L'Derry primary school is believed to have been started deliberately. The fire at the Good Shepherd Primary School, in the Waterside area of the city, was reported shortly before 8pm on Wednesay night, 10 August.

The Sinn Fein Education Minister, John O'Dowd, has approved a proposal to close Lourdes Primary School, Whitehead: "I have agreed to the closure [because of] a decline in enrolments in recent years [that] has given rise to concern.
