Patients And Staff Tested For Bacterial Infection at Altnagelvin Hospital

A number of staff members and patients at Altnagelvin Hospital in L'Derry are being tested and treated for the bacterial infection Streptococcus Group A.

A spokesperson for the Western Trust, said: "Commonly the Streptococcus Group A symptoms are sore throats and minor skin conditions. It is a bacterium that is prevalent in the local community and in most cases can be effectively treated by a course of antibiotics. The Trust has robust infection prevention controls in place and anyone who presents with symptoms will be tested and will commence appropriate treatment."

The bacterial infection is currently isolated to two ward areas.

Tuberculosis alert in Coleraine hospital
A Coleraine Hospital is on tuberculosis alert today after a member of staff contracted a rare form of the respiratory disease. The employee from the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, contracted a multi-drug resistant form of TB. However, they are thought to be in a stable condition.

NI Misses Cancer Treatment Targets
Northern Ireland's hospitals have failed to meet target times for the treatment of patients referred for suspected cancer, a new report by the Department of Health revealed. Its guidelines say 95% of patients should begin their treatment within 62 days. Last December however, the figure stood at 81%, which was the third monthly fall in a row.

Antrim Area Ward Closes Over Vomiting Bug
A ward at Antrim Area Hospital has been closed after 18 suspected cases of the winter vomiting bug were discovered. The Northern Trust has said 13 patients and five staff are suspected to have contracted gastroenteritis. A bay has been closed in one ward where three patients have the infection. The other ten were discovered in another ward.

Health Department launch £2m flu immunisation programme
The Health Department's Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ian Carson, has launched this year’s flu immunisation programme. Dr Carson, who unveiled the programme in Lisburn Health Centre today, revealed that the Department of Health had made over £2m available for this year's programme.

Belfast City Hospital unit reopens
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Belfast City Hospital, which closed as a result of two patients contracting a multi-resistant bacterial infection, has now reopened. The ICU had been closed to new admissions on Tuesday, with emergency patients being treated in the hospital’s High Dependency Unit and the ICU reopened at 9.00am on Thursday morning.
