NI Motorcycle Doctor Killed In Racing Accident

A motorcyle doctor from Northern Ireland has been killed at a racing event in the Republic of Ireland.

Dr John Hinds, one of the 'flying doctors' of Irish Road Racing, died in an accident while attending the Skerries 100 races on 3 July.

He was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin but later passed away from his injuries.

Dr Hinds, who was from Tandragree, was a consultant at Craigavon Hospital in County Armagh.

He had also previously worked at the North West 200 motorbike races in County Antrim.

Health Minister Simon Hamilton has said he was "shocked and saddened" to hear of Dr Hinds' death.

He said: "I had the honour of meeting Dr Hinds recently. His skill was undoubted but what shone through was his passion for his work.

"John was extremely well regarded not just within the medical profession, but right across the motor cycling world, where his loss will be greatly mourned.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time."

The Motor Cycle Union of Ireland has said Dr Hinds will be "sorely missed by everyone."
