Man Arrested After Bonfire Set Alight Weeks Early

A man has been arrested after an eleventh night bonfire was set alight in Belfast.

Two fire appliances were used to put out the blaze at Wellwood Street in the Sandy Row area on Thursday morning.

Chief Inspector Robert Murdie said: "Police are currently at the scene of an incident in Wellwood Street, in the Sandy Row area of south Belfast.

"At this stage it is believed that a bonfire sited in the area has been deliberately ignited which has led to disturbances in the area.

"One man in his 30s has been arrested as a result of the disturbances and is in custody helping police with their enquiries."

A NIFRS spokesman said: "The Police Service of Northern Ireland are facilitating with traffic distribution.

"The incident finished at 10:19am and is being treated as a deliberate fire."

Man Arrested Over Paramilitary-Style Shooting In L'Derry
A man has been arrested in connection with a paramilitary-style shooting in Co L'Derry. A 33-year-old man was shot in the legs and abdomen in the Lisfannon Park area on Tuesday, 08 August. Police described the assault as "brutal and horrific". The 43-year-old suspect was detained in L'Derry on Tuesday, 15 August.

Man Arrested Under Terrorism Act
A man has been arrested under the Terrorism Act in Co Tyrone. The 34-year-old was detained in the Coalisland area on Tuesday, 19 June. He is currently in custody at Musgrave police station. The arrest is in relation to a weapons and ammunition find at a garage in the Mountjoy Road in 2011.

DUP Challenges Council Decision Over Dangerous Bonfires
The DUP is to challenge a Belfast City Council decision on tackling dangerous bonfires. Earlier this week, the local authority backed a motion by Sinn Féin to allow council officers or contractors to remove bonfire materials from sites which threatened lives or property.
