Police Appeal Following Attempted Hijacking In Newtownabbey

Police are appealing for information following an attempted hijacking in Newtownabbey on Sunday.

The incident occurred in Moreland Avenue at around 1.45am.

A taxi driver stopped to ask two men if they had ordered a taxi and while he was talking to them one of the men tried to open the car door which was locked.

The second man demanded the keys to the vehicle and money and punched the taxi driver several times on the head. He tried to pull the driver out of the taxi but he managed to drive away.

The males are described as approximately 5'10" tall, medium build, 20-25 year old, wearing a royal blue hoodie with the hood up with a ginger/blond beard. He spoke with a strong Belfast accent.

The other man is described as approximately 5'10" tall, large build, 20-25 years old, short dark hair, wearing a dark coloured hoodie with the hood down. He also had a strong Belfast accent.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

In the incident, the taxi, a silver coloured Citroen Xsara, was travelling on Northland Road at around 11.30pm, when a man jumped onto the bonnet of the car, before smashing the driver side window with his fist.

A test for new taxi drivers is to be introduced later this week, it has been announced. From 31 October, new taxi drivers will be required to pass a Taxi Driver Theory and Practical Driving Test, the DOE has said. The test will affect new entrants to the industry.
