Rosetta Scientist To Give Lecture At QUB
One of the key scientists behind the Rosetta space mission is to give a lecture at Queen's University, Belfast. Monica Grady CBE, Professor of Planetary and Space Science at the Open University, is a leading scientist in the Rosetta mission which oversaw the landing of the Philae space probe back in November.
Philae became the first spacecraft to successfully land on a moving comet, but scientists at the European Space Agency lost contact with it three days after touchdown when the primary battery ran out. Scientists at ground control continued to work at resuming contact, hoping that the sunlight would recharge the spacecraft's batteries. Last weekend, contact was initiated.
The free public lecture will see Professor Grady deliver the Royal Irish Academy 2015 McCrea Lecture at Queen's on Friday 26 June at 7pm. The event will include a detailed account of the Rosetta mission to date, as well as a general insight into comets and why some people think they may hold the key to how life originated on Earth.
The lecture is anticipated to be popular and advance registration is "essential", the university has said. Further details, as well as how to register, can be found here.
