Families To Challenge HET Report Into McGurk's Bar Bombing

Families of victims killed in one of Northern Ireland's worst atrocities have been granted permission to challenge a report into the bombing quashed.

Fifteen people were killed in a UVF bomb attack on McGurk's Bar In December 1971.

The relatives were in the High Court to challenge the Historical Enquiries Team (HET) review.

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly welcomed the court's decision.

Mr Kelly said: "I welcome the fact that they have now won the right to challenge that report, which claimed that there was no bias in the original police investigation into the attack.

"The Police Ombudsman published a report in 2011 which supported the families' view that there was investigative bias in the RUC investigation and yet the HET rejected this.

"Now the families have been told there will be a full hearing later this year so that they can seek to have the HET report quashed.

"This marks a further step forward in their campaign to access to the truth of what happened to their loved ones."
