Tesco reveal £260m local sourcing figure

Leading UK retailer, Tesco has revealed that it sourced more than £260 million worth of food and drink from local suppliers in 2002.

Early indications also show that this figure will be at least £270 million for year ended 2003.

From the start of July, all of Tesco's Northern Ireland stores have been displaying new signage to mark this commitment to local produce. Many of province's best-known suppliers also feature in this new initiative aimed at highlighting the breadth of locally produced food available in Tesco's local stores.

Caoimhe Mannion, Regional Marketing/PR Manager for Tesco in Northern Ireland said: “Due to our partnerships with many of Northern Ireland’s best-loved companies, we are able to visibly show customers the relationships that exist between Tesco and these local suppliers.

"Through our campaign we hope that customers will be able to recognise locally produced goods even more easily and make an informed choice about the products they buy.

Tesco currently employ more than 7,100 people across their 33 Northern Ireland stores and depots and work with hundreds of local suppliers both directly and indirectly.
