Nolan Supports Dunnes Stores Workers Ahead Of Protest
Galway West TD Derek Nolan has reiterated his support for Dunnes Stores workers ahead of a planned national protest in Dublin this Saturday, 6 June, at 1pm.
Deputy Nolan said: "It is vitally important that Dunnes Stores management engage with their workers regarding ongoing disputes over temporary employment contracts, pay rates and the right to trade union membership.
"It was hoped that the national day of strike action, undertaken by workers on April 2nd, could have helped resolve this matter but unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case.
"In recent weeks allegations of intimidation and retribution have been reported by Dunnes' workers who took part in April's strike – this is simply unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.
"In essence, Dunnes workers want what every worker wants, and needs. They want security of hours and earnings, fair pay, a review of temporary contracts and the right to be represented by a trade union.
"The way that Dunnes Stores have treated the workers thus far has been nothing short of disrespectful. They have refused all invitations to enter negotiations with the Labour Relations Commission and have ignored suggestions by the Labour Court that the company engage with the workers and their union in order to resolve the issues in dispute.
"I am calling on the management of Dunnes Stores to engage with the workers and end this dispute. Decent pay and secure hours are the minimum that any worker should expect."
