Discussions To Continue Over Welfare Reform Crisis

The Executive Party's are to meet again today, Tuesday, with representatives to discuss the Welfare Reform crisis.

SDLP Stormont House Talks negotiator Alex Attwood MLA is urging parties to constructively engage in dialogue to bring a resolution to the crisis.

Mr Attwood said: "Work to build on the strong and make better the elements that are weak - that was our pledge upon the conclusion of the Stormont House talks. We have remained true to that promise and will continue to propose progressive amendments to the current package.

"Despite the threats of the DUP and the reckless attempt to artificially inflate this crisis, we have not run out of road. The Bill may have been defeated in the Assembly, and it was right that we voted against it, but there are provisions for the return of a similar bill in extraordinary circumstances. We consider these circumstances to be extraordinary. The brinkmanship must end, the posturing must end and we must all faithfully come back to the negotiating table."
