Belfast City helps bmi to record passenger figures

Belfast City Airport has helped bmi break its passenger record for the second consecutive month.

The airline group carried 921,000 passengers carried in August, a 25% increase on the same period last previous year, with Belfast seeing a 29% passenger growth.

Austin Reid, bmi chief executive officer, said: "The wide range of competition in all markets continues to impact upon yield levels.

"The summer holiday period has proved to be very encouraging and we look to see some positive indicators in the business and interline sectors as we move forward. However, there is still some way to go and we continue to focus on a strict expenditure regime and an overall reduction of costs."

The overall load factor for bmi's mainline operations out of London Heathrow grew by two points to 75%, compared to the same month last year.

Other key routes which saw growth in Palma, which grew by 38%, Manchester by 29%, Brussels by 27%, Nice by 15% and Paris by 11%.

Belfast City Airport has helped leading UK airline, bmi record a 21% increase in passenger numbers for the month of September. The company's Belfast route saw passenger numbers rise by 14% with the overall number of passengers flying on bmi airlines in September rising to 881,189. The overall monthly load factor also grew by 1% to 74%.

The Belfast to Heathrow route has helped airline bmi attract more passengers than ever before. Airlines bmi and bmibaby saw passenger numbers rise by 32% in October, compared to the same month last year. Its Belfast to Heathrow route, meanwhile, saw passenger numbers increase by 66%.

A 29-year-old woman is being held by police on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in connection with an "incident' in north Belfast on Tuesday 27 July. Responding to a house on Brompton Park shortly after 8pm police discovered two injured children.

Airport Residents Concerned At City Move
Local residents have voiced their concern at the decision by airline bmibaby to switch its operations from Belfast International Airport to George Best Belfast City Airport. The change of gateway airport will see up to 48 weekly flights leaving from the City rather than Aldergrove.

29-Year-Old Convicted Of Range Of Drug Offences
The PSNI has welcomed the sentencing of a 29-year-old man at Belfast Crown Court for a number of drug-related offences. The sentencing comes as a result of an ongoing investigation by the Paramilitary Crime Task Force (PCTF) into the west Belfast UDA.
