PSNI Slammed Over £14m Underspend

The DUP has hit out at the PSNI over a £14 million underspend this year.

Upper Bann DUP MP David Simpson said it is "absurd and ridiculous" that money couldn't be spent while officers were blaming tight budgets for cuts on the frontline.

Mr Simpson said: "The public will be astounded to hear that on the one hand the police are cutting frontline services because of budget pressures but at the same time are handing back £14m they can't spend. This seems absurd and a complete contradiction.

"Only last week I met with senior police officers to discuss concerns about the proposed reduction of neighbourhood police officers operating for the Banbridge PSNI station. Currently 13 officers whom have long association and close affiliation with the town of Banbridge will be deployed to Armagh and Lurgan leaving Banbridge bereft of this valuable service. Banbridge is an area with alarming levels of drug abuse and car crime which need greater police attention not less. A fraction of the £14m would make a massive difference in my area.

"I find it ridiculous that we have a situation where money which could be going towards protecting the community through policing is now unable to be spent."
