Government issues reminder to winter fuel applicants

While the warm weather makes winter seem a long way off, the government is urging over-60s who have not already received a winter fuel payment to apply now.

New applications received before 19 September will get payments in time for Christmas. The winter fuel payment is worth at least £200 per household and this year, for the first time, anyone aged 80 or over could get an extra £100 payment.

People already claiming the state pension or another social security benefit, or who have previously received the payment, don’t need to apply and will receive the money automatically. Over-80s who qualify for the extra money will also receive it automatically.

UK Pensions Minister Malcolm Wicks said: "Older people should not have to worry about keeping their homes warm over the winter months.

“The government is determined to tackle fuel poverty and the Winter Fuel Payment is one of the initiatives that will help to do this."

The winter fuel payment helpline is available on 08459 151515.
