Belfast tourism sector receives online boost
Belfast City Council is using interactive technology in an innovative bid to get everyone involved in both the cultural and tourism sectors to communicate with each other on a regular basis.
The Council’s first Cultural Tourism E-bulletin this week is being delivered to the inboxes of a wide variety of organizations and individuals working in the tourism, arts and cultural sectors in Belfast.
The E-bulletin - the first of its kind to be issued by the Council – is the result of a number of networking events which have been undertaken following last year’s publication of the Council’s cultural tourism strategy, ‘Developing Belfast’s Opportunity’. These events highlighted the importance of regular communication with and between the tourism and cultural sectors in the City.
Councillor Nelson McCausland, Chairman of the Development (Tourism and Promotion of Belfast) Sub-Committee, said: “This E-Bulletin is very innovative, is a first for Belfast City Council and the Tourism Unit has been applauded for leading the way in this new type of communication to a wide variety of individuals and organizations and for facilitating the opportunity for real business to be done”.
Among the issues highlighted in the first E-bulletin are the development of cultural quarters in Belfast, cultural tourism partnerships, pedestrian signage, tourism facts and figures, Belfast City Council’s new culture and arts plan, the Arts Council’s proposals in relation to on-line ticketing and an Audience Development Agency, and links to other websites of interest.

The seminar, held in the Belfast Harbour Commissioners Office and hosted by Belfast City Council, focused on the development of the Quarters and their potential impact on regeneration of the city.

Both an advance - and a more backward step - in tourism matters were highlighted yesterday as two politicians spoke out on making the most of visitor numbers.
