Paisley welcomes counterfeit success
North Antrim MP, Dr Ian Paisley has welcomed yesterday's counterfeit goods success by police at the annual Auld Lammas Fair in Ballycastle.
A substantial amount of counterfeit CDs, DVDs and clothing were recovered on Monday, the first day of the annual two-day fare.
Dr Paisley said: "The raid operation by the police is most welcome. I understand this has been a detailed and well planned operation to put out of business those who profit by counterfeit sales.
"This business causes great distress and undermines legitimate sales across the province. Ballycastle was being given a bad name by such activities. The police action is most welcome and I hope it will be followed up by an operation that puts out of business those behind the trade."
Two hundred officers were involved in the operation in Ballycastle.
The raids followed the news that a major clothing retailer had postponed plans to expand its Northern Ireland market because of the volume of fake goods being sold in the province.
At present counterfeit goods are thought to be worth about £135 million a year to criminals operating in the province.
