Kent Newsprint Firm Goes Into Administration
The threat to 300 jobs at Aylesford Newsprint, after the Kent company announced today that it was going into administration was described as "a bitter blow to the workforce and local economy" by Unite the union.
Unite regional officer Tim Elliot said that he was due to meet the management and also the shop stewards tomorrow, Tuesday 24th February, to ascertain the reasons for the company going into administration and what options were available to maintain employment at the firm.
Mr Elliot said: "This has come as a traumatic blow to the workforce and their families and also the Kent economy as it is one of the biggest employers in the area.
"I am meeting management and the Unite reps tomorrow to see what can be done to secure a future for the company. We have 150 Unite members working at this plant which is one of the few companies to produce newsprint in the UK.
"We will be doing all we can to assist our members at this very difficult time and will be talking to all interested parties."

Prudential Staff To Take Industrial Action
Prudential staff have voted to take industrial action following the announcement that the company will be offshoring skilled jobs to Mumbai. Unite the union members based in Reading, voted 97% in favour of industrial action over plans to offshore some 81 jobs dealing with annuities to India.

Union Fights To Defend 1,550 Jobs
Members of Unite the union are fighting to defend 1,550 jobs at the flagship Legal & General site in Kingswood, Surrey, have vowed to fight on following the announcement that the group's board intends to close the site by 2018. In a communication to staff L&G confirmed the proposal to close the site by the Summer of 2018.

LDV Job Fears As Company Enters Administration

Plans by IT giant, Hewlett Packard (HP) to axe 1,100 jobs at the start of 2014 were condemned by Unite the union. Unite said that HP was a company that was 'a long-term addict to a culture of job cuts' and where its European managers had little autonomy, with the key decisions being made by the company's American bosses.
