Kent Newsprint Firm Goes Into Administration

The threat to 300 jobs at Aylesford Newsprint, after the Kent company announced today that it was going into administration was described as "a bitter blow to the workforce and local economy" by Unite the union.

Unite regional officer Tim Elliot said that he was due to meet the management and also the shop stewards tomorrow, Tuesday 24th February, to ascertain the reasons for the company going into administration and what options were available to maintain employment at the firm.

Mr Elliot said: "This has come as a traumatic blow to the workforce and their families and also the Kent economy as it is one of the biggest employers in the area.

"I am meeting management and the Unite reps tomorrow to see what can be done to secure a future for the company. We have 150 Unite members working at this plant which is one of the few companies to produce newsprint in the UK.

"We will be doing all we can to assist our members at this very difficult time and will be talking to all interested parties."

Coca-Cola To Axe Nearly 300 Jobs
The loss of nearly 300 jobs at Coca Cola Enterprises (CCE) was described as "a devastating blow" by Unite. Unite will be seeking greater clarification of the full impact, following the announcement that CCE is to exit its DSD (Direct Store Delivery) operation resulting in 288 redundancies, 160 of whom are Unite drivers and warehouse workers.
