Three Arrested Over 1972 Murder

Three men have been arrested by detectives investigating the sectarian murder of a man in east Belfast in 1972.

32-year-old Patrick Benstead was found dead in Crossley Street on 2 December after he had been tortured and shot.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Dickson, from Serious Crime Branch, said: "The suspects, aged 61, 67 and 73, were arrested in England, east Belfast and Newtownards this morning. They are being taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station for questioning."

Patrick Benstead was from the Short Strand area of east Belfast. He had last been seen leaving a bar on the Falls Road in west Belfast on the evening of 1 December 1972.

His body was later found in an entry off Crossley Street in the Templemore Avenue area of east Belfast at 07:30 on 2 December.

Man arrested following east Belfast stabbing
Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a stabbing in the Mount area of East Belfast. The victim, a 42-year-old man, sustained a stab wound to the chest and was taken to hospital where his description is described as "serious but stable." The attack occurred at around 8.20am on Monday.

Man Arrested In Jean McConville Investigation
A 56-year-old man has been arrested over the abduction and murder of Jean McConville. The man was arrested in west Belfast on Wednesday morning. A mother of 10, Jean McConville was kidnapped from her flat in the Divis area of Belfast in December 1972 and shot by the IRA.

Adams Contacts Police Over McConville Claims
Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams, has asked his lawyer to contact the police to clarify if detectives need to interview him about the murder of Jean McConville. He was responding to speculation that police might want to question him after veteran republican Ivor Bell was refused bail at the weekend.
