Tributes pour in for trade unionist
Tributes were pouring in today for leading trade unionist, Terry Carlin who has died following a short illness.
Mr Carlin, 57, was pivotal in rallying grass roots support for the Good Friday Agreement as well as raising industrial and social issues.
He had worked for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) for almost 30 years until his retirement in July 2001.
Paying tribute to Mr Carlin, Tom Gillen, Deputy Assistant General Secretary, ICTU, said: "All of the staff of Congress are deeply saddened by the death of our friend Terry Carlin. Terry worked for Congress for almost 30 years and for well over 20 of those he served as Northern Ireland Officer.
"During this time he was at the forefront of the Trade Union Movement. Terry will not only be remembered for his work on industrial and social issues but particularly for his courage in leading the Trade Union Movement through some of its most difficult years. Terry was instrumental in driving the calls for peace in our community linked to both work and progress."
Former SDLP leader John Hume said Mr Carlin had given a lifetime of outstanding service to the trade union movement while fellow SDLP member, Carmel Hanna said Mr Carlin was "very much respected" within the trade union movement.
He leaves behind his wife, Una, and daughter, Angela.
