Minister Promotes 'Safer Internet Day'
Education Minister John O'Dowd has urged people to stay safe when online as part of 'Safer Internet Day 2015'.
He said: "In this fast-paced, ever changing, technological society in which we live, staying safe online is more important now than ever.
"With the increasing use of digital technology, it is vital that children and young people are aware of the potential dangers online and understand how to stay safe."
Safer internet day is celebrated in over 100 countries. It aims to highlight the positives of technology whilst exploring the ways in which the online community can be made safer.
Minister O'Dowd said: "The internet is a rich source of information and entertainment and provides opportunities to learn and develop new skills. Such progress in technology can also expose children to inappropriate material and threats from which they need to be protected.
"Teachers and parents both have a role in educating our young people on using the internet safely and appropriately. Teachers can give pupils opportunities to use and create positive online content and at the same time give them the confidence and the skills to seek help should they encounter problems online. Parents can help by showing an interest and having discussions with their child about their online activity."

NI Businesses Lose Over £2m Following Online Crime
Firms in Northern Ireland lost over £2 million following online crime last year, according to new figures. Figures from Get Safe Online and Action Fraud show 247 cases were reported with total losses amounting to £2,152,343 between March 2015 and March 2016. However, police believe the overall losses could be higher.
